3-D Magic Card Tricks

The Mind's Eye

This effect combines the latest computer technology with classic mentalism to produce something that's everything a great mindreading effect should be:  Simple, Quick and Impressive.

The Effect
The Subject mixes three cards without seeing their faces.  Then, taking one card at a time at random, he places each into a different pocket.  Even though the cards are handled only by the subject, and the faces are never seen, your prediction (which has been in full view the whole time) reveals the exact locations of the cards, and their identities.

The spectator's choices are all made completely at random, no magician's choice.  Only one prediction is used, and it is clear and specific.  It may be any size or shape you desire, and there is no guesswork involved.  All you need are three cards and the prediction, and you are prepared to perform this effect for audiences of one to one hundred or more.

The Mind's Eye
Once you have mastered one simple technique, this effect is foolproof, angleproof, and has impact out of proportion to the amount of effort required.  All you'll need are three of the cards we have supplied, a prediction (which you can prepare in advance and personalize as you wish) and a spectator who wears pants with three pockets in them.

The Cards
The cards are marked, but not in any way that the normal spectator will suspect.  The names of the cards are written across the backs in a manner which can be seen from a couple of feet away, but which is invisible unless you have practiced the technique of relaxing your gaze.  We have described a couple of ways to learn this in our viewing hints area.  For the moment, let's assume you're able to read a card from the back by looking at it for a few seconds.

The Prediction
The prediction should be large enough to prove that it could not have been switched.  The most convenient form is probably a letter typed on your stationery.  This is carried in an envelope along with the cards.  Assuming your cards are the ace of hearts, the queen of diamonds and the seven of hearts (they probably aren't, but you get the idea) the basic information would go something like this:

Prediction
Right Front Pocket:   Seven of Hearts
Left Front Pocket:   Queen of Diamonds
Back Pocket:   Ace of Hearts

Of course, you'll want to embellish this information in order to make it entertaining.  (See the "Presentation" section.)  The key here is to pick an arrangement that's easy for you to remember.

Handling

There is no sleight-of-hand to speak of.  However, you will have to be able to read the cards, and to remember your arrangement.

Open the envelope and pour out the three cards face down on the table.  Hand the envelope (still containing the prediction) to a spectator for safekeeping, or leave it on the table in plain sight.

Ask the spectator to take the three cards behind his back and mix them.  The next procedure is designed to gain you maximum time for reading the cards:

  1. Ask him to take one of the cards from behind his back, and place it face down on the table.  This is your first opportunity to read the back of the card.
  2. Ask him to bring another card forward, and to put it with the first one.  He will either put this second card on top of the first, or he will put them side by side.  Comment on that, giving you another opportunity to read the backs.  (see Presentation)

By this time you will know the identities of the cards on the table, and therefore which card he has behind his back.  Ask him to take that card without looking at it, and to hide it in whatever pocket matches your prediction.  In our case, assuming that it's the ace he has behind his back, you'll tell him to hide it in his back pocket.  Your goal is to deliver this line without a pause.

Next ask him to pick up another card.  As casually as possible, note which card he picks up, and tell him to place it into the proper pocket.

You already know what card is left, and what pocket it goes into, so tell him to pick up the last card, and where to stick it.

That's it.  Have the prediction read, and take a bow.

Sample Presentation

Let's assume you're performing this for a group of fifty people or so.  You've invited the subject, Fred, on-stage.  Someone else is already holding onto the prediction.  You continue:

"Fred, in order to entertain everyone tonight, I am going to perform an experiment with your brain.  Since I don't have the surgical tools that usually involves, I'll have to try to manipulate your brain in a more indirect way.  Before you are three playing cards, the names of which we will keep secret until the end.  Would you please pick them up, take them behind your back, and mix them around a little?  Thanks."

"You're going to place two of the cards back on the table, leaving one behind your back.  Please place one of the cards onto the table.  Great.  Now, I'm going to try to influence you again.  Please place another card on the table with this one."

"Hmmm...you know, you can tell a lot about a person from the way he does this.  You're placed the cards side by side, almost exactly 3/8 of an inch apart.  Some people who are a lot more fussy stack them into a neat little pile, but not you.  I think this is going to work out just as I have predicted."

"You've got one card still behind your back, and you've got to believe that it's your own free choice.  You've made all the decisions, and I haven't touched the cards, but if you think that I could have influenced your choice in some way, this is your chance to change your mind and to exchange that card with either one that's on the table."

"Happy?  Good.  Then hide that card in your back pocket for now, I need you to have both hands free to make another selection."

"Now, please pick up either of these cards, whichever one you feel drawn to at the moment, and place it into your left pants pocket."

"Finally take the remaining card and hide it away--have you got a right front pocket?  Okay, put it there."

Leave Fred standing on-stage, and deliver the following while you go into the audience.

"Well, Fred has done his part, now I'll do mine.  You'll recall that before all of this started I handed out an envelope.  An envelope which you have been holding.  Inside is a prediction.  A letter from me to all of you concerning Fred.  I'll read it, and would you (the person who held the envelope) please read over my shoulder to make sure that everything I say is actually what's written here?  Great."

Read the following prediction, stopping when you get to the actual revelations, and handing the letter to the person reading over your shoulder.  Let her read that part, as you go up on stage, and ask Fred to hand you the cards as the predictions are read.  You then return to the reader, and finish reading the letter yourself, which has a built-in applause cue.

Sample Prediction

To whom it may concern

Ladies and gentlemen, someone in this audience is not who he seems.  Carefully disguised as a normal guy, he is in actuality the world's sneakiest card cheat.

Of course, he may look like he has no idea what's going on.  That's just how sneaky he is.

By the time you read this, I will have found this notorious hustler and isolated him on-stage.  You will know he is the right man by the following signs.  The infamous card cheat always carries three extra playing cards with him, hidden in his pockets.  If this is the man, he will have:

  1. A Seven of Hearts hidden in his Right Front Pocket.
  2. A Queen of Diamonds stashed in his Left Front Pocket.
  3. And hidden in his back pocket, the Ace of Hearts.

If all of these predictions are correct, please forgive our subject, as he had no control over his actions.  Rather, give him a round of applause, that I shall accept on his behalf.

Thank You,

MAGICIAN

That's all there is to it.  It's simple, but you've got to practice delivering your lines without pausing before you tell him which pocket to put each card into.  Do it a few times, and review your prediction just before you do it in public the first few times.

For those of you who have no experience with stereographic images, here are some hints on learning how to see them.  This will take a lot of practice for some, it will come easily for others.  Keep at it.
